Aviators End Road Trip on a High Note

Springfield, OH- The Lafayette Aviators (20-17) edged out the Champion City Kings (19-17) in extra innings to hold on to a 10-9 win on the road against Champion City.

The Kings jumped on the Aviators in the bottom of the first inning. A Bo Seccumbe single scored a run for Champion City with the bases loaded, and then Lafayette walked in a run to make it 2-0 after one inning of play.

Lafayette answered back in a big way in the top of the third inning. The frame started with back to back singles from Mason Sykes (Wabash Valley) and Andrew Eng (Binghamton) top bring up the top of the Aviator order. After Trey Sweeney (Eastern Illinois) drew a walk, Chris Monroe (Illinois-Springfield) flew a ball deep to center to score Sykes from third on a sac fly. On the through from center field to try and beat Sykes at home, the ball sailed into the Champion City dugout, allowing Eng to score all the way from second on the play.

With the game tied, Braedon Blackford (Illinois State) stepped up and belted his fifth homerun of the season over the right field wall to give Lafayette a 4-2 lead. The Aviators got one more run when Miles Simington grounded a ball to first base that was mishandled by the Kings infield. The Flyboys finished the third inning with five runs and five hits.

Down 5-2, Champion City started their comeback with a solo homerun in the fourth inning and then in the fifth slapped up three runs on four hits. Bo Seccombe homered in the fifth to tie the game at 5-5 before Jon Erhard singled to score the sixth run for the Kings.

The Aviators responded in the eighth with four runs. Andrew Eng led off the inning with his second hit of the evening. After Eng, Braedon Blackford laid down a beautiful bunt on a suicide squeeze play to score Eng who was screaming down the third base line. With the game tied, Kollyn All (Butler) singled to right field to bring in Trey Sweeney and give the Aviators a 7-6 lead. Miles Simington (Purdue) then singled with the bases loaded and two outs to bring in two more Aviators to make it 9-6.

The Kings scored two runs in the eighth and one in the bottom of the ninth to send the game to extra innings. In the top of the tenth inning for Lafayette, Andrew Eng came through with his third hit of game and singled with two outs. Miles Simington started the play at second and raced around the base paths to barely beat the throw home to score the winning run.

The Aviators will come home to Loeb on Thursday for four consecutive days of home games.
