Lafayette Aviators News Release
Terre Haute, IN - The Aviators (19-16) dropped a pair of games to the Terre Haute Rex (18-17) at Bob Warn Field on Sunday. The Rex took game one 8-6 and game two by a score of 9-6.
Game 1
The Terre Haute starter Kaleb Huxford struggled to find the strike zone in the first inning and walked the bases loaded for Braedon Blackford (Illinois State). Blackford stepped in and delivered his fifth triple of the year to clear the bases and give Lafayette a 3-0 lead. Two pitches later, Blackford scored from third base on a wild pitch to push the Aviator lead to 4-0.
Lafayette and Terre Haute went back and forth trading runs throughout the first three innings. After the Rex got two runs back in the first inning, Chris Monroe (Illinois Springfield) grounded a ball to the Terre Haute second basemen to score Trey Sweeney (Eastern Illinois) to make it 5-2 Aviators.
The Rex grabbed two more runs in the bottom of the second inning, but then Lafayette came through with their second triple of the day. Nick Mayerhofer (Illinois Springfield) tripled down the left field line to score Alex Dorethy (Western Illinois). With a 6-4 lead, the Aviators gave up a three-run homerun to Mason Speirs to give their first lead of the day. Jacob Mulcahy singled to bring in another Terre Haute run, giving the Rex a 8-6 edge.
Game 2
The Aviators struck first again in game two of the twin bill. Trey Sweeney led off the first inning with a double, and then later in the frame Braedon Blackford nailed a sac fly to left field to score Sweeney. After Blackford's RBI, Kollyn All (Butler) singled to score Chris Monroe and make it a 2-0 ballgame.
After the top of the first inning it was all Terre Haute. The Rex scored three runs in the bottom of the first and then tacked on one run in the third, two in the fourth on a Justin Jenkins homerun, and 3 in the fifth.
Despite a seven-run deficit, the Aviators got right back in it in the top of the sixth inning. Kollyn All led off the inning with a double off the wall in center field. After All, Matt Mackey (Eastern Illinois) got hit by a pitch and Alex Dorethy drew a walk to load the bases. Matt Phipps (Western Kentucky) stepped up and singled into center to bring in All and Mackey, making it 9-4. With two runners on base, Mason Sykes (Wabash Valley) subbed into the game and delivered a no-out single to reload the bases. Trey Sweeney then singled to drive home another run for the Aviators. Down 9-5, Chris Monroe grounded into a double play that scored the fourth and final run of the sixth for Lafayette.
Even with momentum heading into the top of the seventh, the Aviators were unable to come up with anything in the seventh inning and fell 9-6.
