Lafayette Aviators News Release

The Lafayette Aviators start the season 4-0 and finished a sweep of the West Virginia Miners on Sunday with a 13-4 victory.

Braedon Blackford (Carl Sandburg College) doubled to lead off the fourth inning for the Aviators. After Max Montgomery (Milwaukee Area) moved Blackford over to third base with a flyout to center, Blake Schmitt (Purdue) singled to bring home the baserunner and score the first run of the day.

After a sleepy five innings, Lafayette exploded in the sixth and seventh. Blake Schmitt started off the top of the sixth with a double to the leftfield wall. After the Schmitt double, the Aviators drew three consecutive walks and forced in a run. With Chris Monroe (Illinois Springfield) at the dish, a passed ball allowed Evan Allen (Danville Area) to score from third base. Monroe went on to single to bring in the third run of the inning. Matt Mackey (Eastern Illinois) joined in the fun with a single of his own to make it 5-1 Aviators.

Haden Fisk (Milwaukee Area) gave the Aviators a solid start on the mound. Fisk went five innings and only allowed one run on three hits.

Lafayette struck again at the plate in the seventh with three hits and three runs. First, Mason Sykes knocked a single for his second hit of the day to score Tyler Powers (Purdue). With Sweeney and Sykes on base, Chris Monroe launched a double to score the two Aviators on the base-paths and extend the lead to 8-2. Monroe has seven RBI through four games with the Aviators already.

The Aviators eventually went on to stretch the lead even more in the eighth and ninth innings. Blackford doubled again in the eighth inning and eventually came into score. The Miners couldn't get out of their own way in the ninth, and an error allowed two Aviators runs to score. Lafayette went on to put up four runs in the final inning.

Several Aviators have been impressive at the plate so far this season. Tonight, Blake Schmitt, Trey Sweeney, Mason Sykes, Braedon Blackford, and Chris Monroe all turned in multi-hit performances. Braedon Blackford, Trey Sweeney (Eastern Illinois), and Mason Sykes (Wabash Valley) all have recorded a hit in all four games so far this summer.

The Aviators will have an off day on Monday and then will play at Danville at 7:30 PM ET on Tuesday. The Lafayette Aviators' first home game is on Thursday, June 6th against the Danville Dans. The first home game will be a Thirsty Thursday brought to you by People's Brewing Co. and 101.7 The Hammer. Thursday will also be Purdue night at Historic Loeb Stadium, with Purdue head football coach Jeff Brohm throwing out the honorary first pitch.
