Los Angeles Avengers News Release

LOS ANGELES - Ricky Sharpe, a versatile athlete with some NFL and NFL Europe experience, has signed a one-year contract with the Los Angeles Avengers, head coach Ed Hodgkiss announced today.

Sharpe (6-foot-1, 190 pounds) will compete for a spot as a wide receiver/defensive back when training camp opens on Jan. 3.

Following the 2003 NFL Draft, Sharpe signed a free agent contract with the Cleveland Browns, but was released prior to the start of the regular season. He was later re-signed by the Browns and allocated to the Frankfurt Galaxy of NFL Europe. Sharpe intercepted two passes for the Galaxy, helping them advance all the way to World Bowl XII. After returning to the United States, he was a member of the Miami Dolphins' practice squad in 2004.

A three-year starter at San Diego State University, Sharpe finished his collegiate career with 191 tackles, 31 pass breakups, six interceptions and three fumble recoveries. He earned a spot on the All-Mountain West Conference second team as a sophomore cornerback in 2000 and followed that up with a pair of MWC honorable mention selections as a junior and senior.

Sharpe attended Mt. Carmel High School (San Diego, Calif.), where he was a three-year starter on the football team. As a senior in 1997, he earned first team All-County honors from the San Diego Union-Tribune, catching 40 passes for 463 yards and four touchdowns. Sharpe also made 37 tackles and had four interceptions on his way to being named Mt. Carmel's "Defensive M.V.P." He also earned three letters in track & field and two in basketball for the Sundevils.

Born on Jan. 23, 1980, in Seattle, Wash., Sharpe is related to former NFL stars Sterling and Shannon Sharpe. He majored in public administration at San Diego State.

The Avengers will kick off their seventh season in the 20-year-old AFL at STAPLES Center on Sunday, Jan. 29, versus the Arizona Rattlers. Nine-game season ticket packages are on sale now. Please call 1-888-AVENGERS for more information or visit the team's official Website at www.laavengers.com.
