Los Angeles Avengers News Release
LOS ANGELES - The Arena Football League and the U.S. Army have joined forces with local teams throughout the United States to promote "Boot Camp," a high school education and fitness initiative. Today, the Los Angeles Avengers visited Crenshaw High School to discuss the importance of fitness, education and leadership.
Defensive specialist Damen Wheeler and wide receiver/defensive back Kareem Kelly joined drill sergeants from the U.S. Army to take over physical education classes for the entire day.
"It was a real pleasure to work with Sergeant Peoples on expressing the message that we were trying to get across," Wheeler said. "It's always fun for me to get out in the community and interact with kids."
The Avenger players along with Sergeant Peoples addressed the students at the beginning of their physical education classes and introduced the class to both the Army's physical training drills and Arena Football League drills. The Army also supplied dog tags to students participating.
The U.S. Army Accessions Command, USAAC, headquartered at Fort Monroe, Va., is charged with overseeing recruiting and training of both enlisted soldiers and officers for the Army. USAAC is composed of the U.S. Army Recruiting Command at Fort Knox, Ky., the U.S. Army Cadet Command at Fort Monroe, Va. and the U.S. Army Training Center at Fort Jackson, S.C.
