Austin Turfcats News Release
Austin, TX - The Austin Turfcats (6-2) will hit the road and take on the Acadiana Mudbugs (5-3) in Lafayette, La on Monday. The Turfcats are looking to avenge their first loss of the season after the Mudbugs won the Southern Indoor Football League inaugural game 37-29 over the Turfcats.
The Turfcats are coming off of a hard-fought 41-34 come-back victory over the Texas Hurricanes on Saturday in Austin. The Turfcats erased a 20-0 first half deficit, taking their first lead 28-27 when Deron Ellis threw a 27-yard touchdown to Robert Quiroga at the beginning of the fourth quarter. The teams then traded touchdowns to tie the score at 34 after Tim Blackwell's 7-yard run. After a missed Hurricane field goal the Turfcats drove 45 yards to take the lead with 56 seconds remaining and then sealed it when Michael Catchings recovered a fumble with one second left.
Five different players scored the Turfcats' six touchdowns, with Reggie Smith posting a 44-yard kickoff return and a 29-yard touchdown reception and rushing scores from Kelly Hancock and Keith Clay. Ellis finished with 153 total yards, two passing touchdowns and one rushing.
The Mudbugs are also coming off a win Saturday after defeating the North Texas Crunch 45-6 at home. Sean Samuels came off the bench after starting quarterback Bo Bartik was injured and completed 9 of 13 passes for 113 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for another. Antonio Logan scored two touchdowns and so did Anthony Parks, who missed the last two games due to injury but had eight catches for 91 yards this game. Kemmie Lewis also had a touchdown and an interception.
In the first meeting between these two teams the Turfcats returned a fumble and Darrick Wallace returned both a kickoff and a field goal for scores but it wasn't enough to overcome the Mudbugs. Mudbugs quarterback, Bo Bartik, was 15 of 25 for 197 yards and four touchdowns, while wide receiver Jermaine Martin had six catches for 76 yards and three touchdowns and Kemmie Lewis caught three interceptions.
Kickoff is at 7:05 p.m. at the Blackham Coliseum in Lafayette, La. Tickets will be available for purchase at the box office on game day. Live updates of the game will be available at Turfcats.com and Twitter.com/austinturfcats.
