Austin Bold FC News Release
AUSTIN, TX - Austin Bold FC announced on Wednesday the addition of the 2016 USL MVP Sean Ugo Okoli ahead of the 2021 USL Championship season, pending league and federation approval. Per club policy, contract terms will not be released.
"The best way to describe Sean is as a clinical finisher with a number nine's hunger to score goals," said Austin Bold FC head coach Marcelo Serrano. "A player of his caliber can score 15 to 20 goals a season and play at the highest level. I want to help him reach the peak of his ability that I know is there. We're excited to have him be a part of the Bold family and know he's going to come into the team and add value every day."
Okoli, 28, spent 2020 with USL Championship club Orange County SC. In 15 matches, Okoli led the OCSC attack as top goalscorer with seven goals and was the joint assist leader with two.
"I'm very happy and excited to be joining Austin Bold! I'm looking forward to being a player the club and the city can rely on to help get the wins needed to achieve our targets," said Okoli. "I'm a guy who's eager to win games. My USL MVP and Golden Boot is a taste of what I can bring, and I'm looking forward to bring that same work ethic, experience, leadership, and a lot more to this team."
A Washington state native, Okili joined the Seattle Sounders youth academy before playing collegiately at Wake Forest University. Okoli moved to the Seattle Sounders FC first team after signing a Homegrown Player contract before the 2014 season and made three appearances with his hometown club.
After spending 2015 with MLS club New England Revolution, Okoli joined FC Cincinnati. The striker was a league standout winning the 2016 USL Golden Boot with 16 goals and being named 2016 USL Most Valuable Player. He returned to MLS in 2017 with New York City FC before continuing his career in Europe. Okoli spent time with Sweden's Landskrona BoIS, Norway's FK Jerv, and Austria's FC Pinzgau Saalfelden.
