Atlanta Vibe News Release
The Atlanta Vibe fell to the Omaha Supernovas 3-1 Thursday at the Georgia State Convocation Center in front of a downtown Atlanta crowd of 2,700 announced fans.
"I thought we came out hot and did some really nice things in the third set, but it's kind of the same story for this team as we just got to continue to find consistency," Vibe Head Coach Kayla Banwarth said. "We keep seeing glimpses and then we're letting our opponents dictate the match and set the tone of the match."
Atlanta and Omaha battled in a tight, extra point first set where the Supernovas took the early 1-0 lead with a 26-24 result.
The Supernovas doubled up in the second set with a 25-15 win to make it 2-0.
The Vibe struck back in the third set with a convincing 25-15 result to decrease the deficit 2-1 behind four kills and two blocks from Middle Blocker Phoebe Awoleye.
Omaha secured the 3-1 victory in the fourth set with a 25-19 set win.
Outside Hitter Leah Edmond and Opposite Hitter Aiko Jones both scored 15 kills to co-lead the Vibe's offensive effort. Edmond added a team-high 16 digs for a double-double and Jones racked up four blocks.
Discussing the emotion she showed in the fourth set, Jones said Atlanta wants it bad in an extremely competitive race for the playoffs.
"I think it was passion and frustration," Jones said. "That's just coming from I love this sport and I love these girls. Every time you go out there you want to play your best, and I think we've yet to do that consistently."
Setter Averi Carlson scored a double-double with 40 assists and 15 digs, her 10th match of the season with 40 or more assists.
Georgia's own Awoleye finished with seven kills and five blocks.
Awoleye was grateful to see the hometown crowd show up with fervor.
"I had friends in the crowd, like I saw old coaches and my parents were here," Awoleye said. "Just the energy the entire night, whether we were up or down, was incredible and we're so grateful."
Atlanta returns for the second half of the Georgia State Convocation Center doubleheader Saturday at 6 PM ET against the Orlando Valkyries.
