CHESTER, Pa - Atlanta United fell 4-1 to Philadelphia Union at Subaru Park on Wednesday night. Andrew Gutman scored his third goal of the season.
After an open first 15 minutes, Philadelphia scored first in the 18th minute through Julian Carranza, as the Argentine forward found the bottom corner of the net with a right-footed strike from outside the box.
Atlanta responded quickly in the 25th minute. After some quick combination play around the top of the box, Luiz Araújo fired a shot off a Union defender that fell to Thiago Almada near the penalty spot. Almada placed a shot on goal but was denied by a reaction save from Andre Blake. Gutman reacted first to the loose ball and laid out for a diving header to level the match.
Despite Atlanta having the better of the chances in the first half, Mikael Uhre scored a second goal for the hosts in first-half stoppage time. A Union corner kick bounced through the middle of a crowded 18-yard box before reaching Uhre, whose shot took a deflection on its way past Rocco Ríos Novo at the near post.
Atlanta had a chance to even the score in the 57th minute when Caleb Wiley beat his defender on the left side, dribbled towards goal and set up Almada in the middle of the box, however the Argentine's shot went over the crossbar.
Daniel Gazdag scored in the 67th minute to make it 3-1. Jose Martinez played in a cross from the right side that was headed into the air and ultimately kept alive by Cory Burke. The ball fell to an open Gazdag who slotted the ball into an empty net from six yards out. Nathan Harriel added a fourth goal in stoppage time.
Atlanta (8-11-9, 33 points) travels to Providence Park to take on Portland Timbers on Sunday, Sept. 4 (5:30 p.m., FOX, FOX Deportes, Sports Radio 92-9 The Game, La Mejor).
