Atlanta Silverbacks Champions League Underway

Atlanta, GA - The Atlanta Silverbacks Champions League brought to you by McDonald's has completed the second round of the group stage this past week. The 2009 tournament has seen a number of new leagues participating in the tournament hoping to prove they can compete against other top teams in the area for the $25,000 in cash prices.

In Group 1, Pozahualco and the 2005 tournament champion, San Diego Silverbacks, have already clinched spots in the quarterfinals. Tonight they face off at 7pm to determine who will earn the top spot in the group.

At 9pm Aztlan (1pt) faces a tough battle against Group 2 top seed and 2006 tournament champion, Uprising Future Stars (6pts). Aztlan must win and hope for an upset between Melchester Wings (3pts) and Once Oriental (0pts) in order to keep their quest for the trophy alive. Otherwise, Melchester will qualify as the second seed from Group 2.

On Friday, Groups 3 and 4 will face off to determine who qualifies for the quarterfinals. Group 3 will come down to a goal differential decision if Tierra Caliente (3pts) can pull off a win against top seed Puerto Principe (6pts).

As in Group 1, it has already been determined which teams will be moving onto the quarterfinals in Group 4. Although both will advance, the match between Chivitas and Guayabo will still play a significant role to determine which of the two takes the top seed.
