At The Aba Finals With Coach T

March 18, 2009 - American Basketball Association (ABA)
Southeast Texas Mavericks News Release

The quest for an ABA Championship begins today vs the Knoxville Thunderbolts, who defeated the Texas Fuel 131-127 last night in the play-in game. Knoxville has a good team and will be a challenge for us. They persevered last night coming from behind to knock off a very good Fuel team that we battled all season long in our division. Though the Fuel did not bring their full team and without Leonard Brown & Kenny Wilson, they were weakened quite a bit, but you have to give credit to the Thunderbolts from Knoxville, for they hung in there and found a way to win last night in a very good and hard fought game, so we'll have our hands full this evening at 5:00 PM when we tip off things at the Municipal Auditorium here in Nashville, TN.

Every Head Coach is like a pilot getting ready for take-off when flying. You have your check list of things you have to get ready to fly! Me & my coaching staff went through that yesterday as we had our final practice before our first game. We have now completed the preparations for the initial game and now it is time to take off! "GO MUSTANGS!!!"

Many of my former Assistant Coaches are here with me lending their support to the Ole' Basketball Coach. That group is led by "THE LEGEND" Coach Gerald Oliver. Coach O and I go way back and his support is much appreciated as is the support of several assistant coaches that have worked with me over the years. Coach Kevin Keathley (CBA Head Coach for the Kentucky Miners) arrives here today. Former Assistant Coaches, Coach Keith Dean and Coach Michael Holloway lined up our practice facilities for us here. So many of my former Assistant Coaches have been very helpful in helping us prepare for the ABA Championship Finals. I have been fortunate over the years to have very good Coaching Staffs as I do this year with our Southeast Texas Mustangs. All I can say is thanks to Coach Bernard Boyd, Coach Dennis Skeadas, Coach Jonathon Greenaway, and Coach Johnny Tyson for the help they've given me this year with our Mustangs. Loyal, Honest, & Hard Working Assistants are hard to find to today and I'm lucky to have such good men working with me -- Thanks to all of these coaches for their most valuable help & support!!!

Well, we're ready to get started with it all this evening! It now comes down to just going out and doing what we do! I say lets just go play and see what happens... Let's Go Getter Done, for the time is now, and the moment is now!!! "GO MUSTANGS!!!"

Note: OurSports Central no longer actively covers the American Basketball Association (ABA) as a professional league due in part to its inability to publish and play a schedule and the transitory nature of many of its teams.
