Greeneville Astros News Release
Greeneville, TN - The Greeneville Astros (20-17) took a 4-3 victory over the Kingsport Mets (18-19) in an extra-inning walk-off at Pioneer Park on Friday.
The two franchises battled throughout nine innings in the first of a three-game series deciding supremacy in the Appalachian League Western Division.
Both clubs were quiet at the plate until the fourth inning when Kingsport scored three runs on three hits and one error. With Milton Ramos on first after the error, Dash Winningham followed with a single. Patrick Mazeika doubled to right to score Ramos then Luis Ortega proceeded to plate Winningham and Mazeika on a ground-rule double.
Down 3-0, the Astros answered with a pair of runs in the home half of the fourth after second baseman Ford Stainback led off with a double to left field to improve his hitting streak to 12 games. Conner Goedert drew a walk then advanced to second as Stainback moved to third on a Hector Roa groundout. Brauly Mejia knocked a single to left to score Stainback and move Greeneville within two runs.
Left fielder Justin Garcia grounded a sharp single into right field to score Goedert and make the game 3-2 in Kingsport's favor.
After the fourth, Cristhopher Santamaria relieved Astros starting pitcher Erasmo Pinales. Pinales concluded the night with four hits allowed over four full innings, three runs, two earned and five strikeouts. Santamaria took over the fifth and tossed shutout ball with no hits or runs and a walk.
The scoring efforts for both teams were stifled from the fifth to the seventh until the Astros struck to tie the score at three runs apiece in the bottom of the eighth. Myles Straw led off the half-inning with a double to right field then advanced to third on a wild pitch with Stainback at the plate. Mets' reliever Yoryi Nuez issued an intentional walk to Goedert to put runners on the corners.
Greeneville's Hector Roa then lined a single to right to bring in Straw for the tying run and deadlock the game at 3-3. Neither team managed to score in the final frame, sending the game to extra-innings.
In the bottom of the tenth, Stainback nailed a one-out single to left then moved to second after a Goedert single. With two on and one out, Mejia singled on a soft line drive to shallow left field to score Stainback from second and give the Astros the 4-3, walk-off victory.
Right-hander Devonte German, an 11th round pick in 2013, earned his third win of 2015 by pitching five innings and only allowing one hit and one walk while striking out five.
Stainback, Straw and Mejia each went two-for-five with Stainback scoring twice, Straw scoring once and stealing three bases while Mejia notched two RBI. Roa was one-for-five with his 22nd RBI. Garcia and Goedert were each one-for-three with Goedert scoring his 21st run of the season.
The Astros will play at Kingsport on Saturday and return to face the Mets again at Pioneer Park for a Sunday matinee with first pitch scheduled at 2 PM.
