Elizabethton, TN - The Greeneville Astros (26-22) defeated the Elizabethton Twins (25-24) Wednesday night by a score of 4-1, thanks to an outstanding pitching performance. The victory keeps the Astros in first place in the Appalachian League West division, one game ahead of the Kingsport Mets.

The Astros threw right-hander Diogenes Almengo on the hill to start the game. Almengo, who was called up to Greeneville from the Gulf Coast League on July 27th, had his best outing so far, pitching five full innings, allowing only one hit, and striking out five. He now owns a 0.87 ERA through 10.1 innings pitched.

Connor Goedert led Greeneville offensively, going two-for-four at the plate and smacking his team-leading 16th double of the season. Goedert has been seeing the ball well, racking up five hits in the series.

Myles Straw, who went one-for-three with two walks on the night, scored his 33rd run of the season to give the Astros a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning. After reaching on a groundball single, Straw advanced to second on a wild pitch and came across to score on a fielding error by the Elizabethton shortstop. He scored his 34th run, tying him for second in the league, in the top of the eighth after drawing a walk, stealing second base, and scoring when Daz Cameron got into a pickle between first and second.

Daz Cameron scored in the top of the sixth for the Astros' third run. After reaching on fielding error by Twins' pitcher Samuel Clay, Cameron advanced to third base on a wild pitch and a Goedert single. Kyle Tucker then sent a groundball up the middle to score Cameron from third.

Arturo Michelena knocked home the Astros' fourth and final run in the top of the ninth inning. Kevin Martir drew a one-out walk and was replaced by pinch runner Ford Stainback. Following a Randy Cesar walk, Michelena then sent a line drive to right field to bring Stainback home and increase the Astros' lead to three runs.

Moreno Polanco entered the game to pitch in the sixth inning and did not allow a hit across his two innings of work, although a run did come across to score on a sacrifice fly. The young right-hander picked up two strikeouts to bring his season total to five.

Lachlan Madden and Samil De Los Santos combined to pitch a hitless last two innings of the game. They walked only one batter while striking out three.

The Astros will travel to Pulaski on Thursday, August 13th for a three-game series with the Yankees. Thursday's game will begin at 7:00 PM.
