Greeneville Astros News Release
Bristol, VA - The Greeneville Astros (8-10) came out swinging at Boyce Cox Field on Monday night. With a seven-run first inning and 15 runs throughout the course of the game, both season-highs, the Astros coasted to a 15-3 win over the host Bristol Pirates (4-13).
There were several standout performers for the Astros on the night as nine different batters had at least one hit and 10 scored at least one run. Shortstop Juan Santana, hitting second in the lineup, led the team with four of each as he went four-for-six on the night. Of course, this is nothing new for Santana as he has collected 14 hits and scored 11 runs over his last five games.
Sean McMullen is another player that had a significant impact on the game, just as he has throughout the early part of the season for the Astros. The current team leader with a .367 batting average, McMullen racked up a season-high five RBI on the night along with a triple and a homerun.
McMullen's homer was a two-run shot to right field in the first inning with Santana on first, but the Astros were just beginning. A few batters later, Bryan Muniz hit a base-clearing three-run triple. Then, after Antonio Nunez drew a walk, Muniz scored on failed pickoff attempt at first. Finally, Jason Martin concluded the Astros' seven-run inning with a RBI triple, the Astros' second triple of the inning and Martin's fifth of the young season.
The Pirates got a solo homerun from Pablo Reyes in the second inning, but the Astros canceled out that run with a Santana RBI single in the third. Then McMullen followed with a two-run triple, which was the Astros' team-record third triple of the game.
Throughout the night, the odd innings seemed to favor the Astros as they added three more runs in the fifth before a two-run double from Trent Woodward in the seventh concluded their scoring. In total, the Astros finished with 15 runs on 15 hits with four errors.
Bristol went on to add two runs in the eighth on a Tomas Morales two-run double, but that would be the final score of the night. The Pirates ended the game with three runs on eight hits and three errors.
Dean Deetz got his first professional start for the Astros and allowed one run on two hits over two innings. Brock Dykxhoorn, the 2014 6th round draft selection, followed with two scoreless innings in which he allowed only two hits and had one strikeout to earn his first professional win. Then, Keegan Yuhl, who pitched the next three scoreless innings, combined with Eric Peterson and Krishawn Holley to go the rest of the way for the Astros and finish the game.
The Astros will travel to Bristol one more time on Tuesday for a 7:00pm game before returning to Pioneer Park for a six-game homestand beginning Wednesday.
