Greeneville Astros News Release
Greeneville, TN - The Greeneville Astros and Elizabethton Twins, the top two teams in the Appalachian League West Division, met for the first time this season on a wet Wednesday night at Pioneer Park. After raining for most of the day, it finally stopped in time for the game as the Astros knocked off the Twins, 7-4, and moved within 1.5 games of the division lead.
Greeneville's D'Andre Toney doubled to lead off the first inning and then stole third base. Then Brian Blasik, who went two-for-three with four RBI on the night, hit a deep ball to center field to score Toney on a sacrifice fly and give the Astros a 1-0 lead.
After a scoreless second inning, Elizabethton's first two batters in the third drew walks. Two batters later, Max Kepler knocked in a run on a RBI single to even the game at 1-1. However, the tie did not last long.
In the Astros half of the third inning, Angel Ibanez led off with a single. Jimmy Howick followed with a double to move Ibanez over to third. Then, Ibanez scored on a wild pitch with D'Andre Toney at the plate. After Marc Wik was walked, it left the Astros with the bases loaded by Howick, Toney and Wik. A triple from Blasik brought all three home, and a sacrifice fly by Terrell Joyce scored Blasik one batter later. That gave the Astros five runs in the inning and a 6-1 lead.
The Twins led off the fourth inning with a triple from Adam Walker. Then, Travis Harrison hit for a single to drive him in and cut the Astros lead to 6-2.
That is where the score remained until the bottom of the eighth inning when Ernesto Genoves singled to score Ariel Ovando. That pushed the Astros lead to 7-2 heading into the final frame.
Although the Twins attempt at a rally came up short, they did manage to add two more runs before Greeneville's Michael Dimock closed the door with a strikeout to end the game and preserve a 7-4 win for the Astros.
Greeneville starter Adrian Houser picked up eight strikeouts and earned his first win of the season after giving up two runs on six hits over six innings.
The Astros host the Elizabethton Twins in game two of the three-game series on Thursday at 7:00pm. For more information on the Greeneville Astros, please visit www.greenevilleastros.com or call (423) 638-0411.
