Greeneville Astros News Release
Greeneville, TN - The Greeneville Astros (25-22) were unable to keep up with the Johnson City Cardinals (26-21) on Wednesday night as they took a 7-3 loss at Pioneer Park. As a result, the Cardinals moved ahead of the Astros into sole possession of first place in the Appalachian League West Division.
Trailing 1-0 in the third inning, Astros shortstop Jonathan Arauz hit his team-leading 10th double of the season to get into scoring position. Next up to bat, Stijn van der Meer singled to bring Arauz home and even the score.
The Cardinals would pull back ahead with consecutive two-run innings before the Astros scored their second run of the night in the sixth. With Frankeny Fernandez on first with two outs, Reiny Beltre singled to move him to second. Fernandez then came in to score on a fielding error by the Cardinals to cut the deficit to 5-2.
In the ninth inning, now down by five, the Astros were only able to muster one more score. Oscar Campos hit a single to center field and moved over to second on a Vicente Sanchez walk. Then, on back-to-back wild pitches, Campos advanced to third and also scored the Astros final run.
The Cardinals scored their first run in the second inning off a Joey Hawkins single to center field. Their next two runs, in the top of the fourth, both came on a DeAndre Asbury-Heath double to center field. The next inning, the Cardinals added two more runs on a Joshua Lopez RBI single and a balk. Finally, the Cardinals last two runs came as Andrew Knizner hit a two-run homer over the left field wall in the seventh.
Cardinals starting pitcher David Oca earned the win after allowing two runs on seven hits over five and two-thirds innings. Keaton Siomkin got the hold with no hits or runs allowed over one and one-third innings.
The Astros will send Colin McKee to the mound against Levi MaVorhis for the second game of the series against the Cardinals on Thursday night at 7:00pm.
