Greeneville Astros News Release
Greeneville, TN - The Appalachian League Western Division-leading Greeneville Astros (21-18) were defeated 6-1 by the Kingsport Mets (19-20) in Sunday's series finale.
The Mets performed well early and late in the matchup posting two runs in the first, three runs in the sixth and one run in the seventh inning of the Sunday matinee. The Greeneville pitching staff fell victim to a timely hitting Mets offense as they allowed nine Kingsport hits in the matchup.
Right-hander Andrew Thome took the loss starting the game with three innings pitched allowing five hits and two runs, both unearned. Makay Nelson followed tossing two and two-thirds allowing three hits and three runs while striking out four. Lefty Cristhopher Santamaria took the mound for one and one-third inning allowing a lone run on a single hit.
A silver lining from the loss was Samil De Los Santos' two flawless innings with one strikeout thrown to close out the ballgame.
The solo Astros run came in the bottom of the third when shortstop Osvaldo Duarte grounded his fifth double of the season to left field. With one out and Duarte on second, recently promoted Greeneville centerfielder Daz Cameron laced a groundball single to right to score Duarte. Cameron followed with his third stolen base in two games since his call-up before the inning ended.
Greeneville was led at the plate by Duarte who finished the day two-for-four with a run followed by Cameron who went one-for-two drawing two walks, stealing a base and recording his RBI. Third baseman Arturo Michelena and catcher Christian Correa were each one-for-three with walks. Leftfielder Myles Straw went one-for-five with a stolen base.
The Astros will have a league-mandated off-day tomorrow then hit the road for a three-game set with Bluefield Blue Jays on Wednesday. The team will return to Pioneer Park on Friday to commence a series with the Bristol Pirates.
