Greeneville, TN - The Greeneville Astros (27-26) defeated the Johnson City Cardinals (23-28) Monday night by a score of 9-5. The victory keeps the Astros in third place in the Appalachian League West division, two games behind the Kingsport Mets and Elizabethton Twins.

The Astros struck early in Monday night's ballgame by scoring three runs in the bottom of the first inning. Myles Straw and Daz Cameron led off by slapping back-to-back singles and were followed by a Randy Cesar groundball to score Straw from second for the first Astros run. Following a Connor Goedert walk, the red-hot Kyle Tucker hit a double to deep left-center field to score Cameron and Goedert and the Astros' lead increased to 3-0.

However, Johnson City battled back and put up four runs themselves on three RBI singles in the top of the second inning to take a one run lead. They padded their lead in the top of the fourth by bringing in another runner on a Ryan McCarvel double and moving the score to 5-3.

Refusing to give up, the Astros scraped together one run in the bottom of the fourth inning and hacked away at Johnson City's lead. Osvaldo Duarte led things off by smacking a ball off the left field fence for a double. Two outs later, Randy Cesar came up and sent a flyball single to right field to score Duarte and pick up his second RBI of the night.

The Astros rallied to take the lead once again in the bottom of the sixth inning. Duarte led off by singling up the middle for his second hit of the night. Myles Straw then laid down a sacrifice bunt, but an errant throw from Cardinals' pitcher Juan Caballero allowed Duarte to score from first and tie the game. Daz Cameron then lined a double to right field to score Straw and give the Astros a one-run lead.

Randy Cesar continued the rally by doubling to left to score Cameron and picking up his third RBI of the night. Kevin Martir clobbered a ball to deep left field for a sacrifice fly, allowing Cesar to come in to score. After all was said and done the Astros emerged from the sixth inning with an 8-5 lead.

Greeneville tacked on one more run in the bottom of the seventh. Myles Straw got his second hit of the night by sending a groundball to right field to score Duarte from second, increasing the Astros lead to 9-5.

Randy Cesar, Daz Cameron, and Osvaldo Duarte all had three-hit nights at the plate. They went a combined nine-for-fourteen with seven runs scored and four RBI. Each one of them hit a double to contribute to the team's five doubles on the night, tying their season high.

Diogenes Almengo received the win for the Astros after entering the game in relief and tossing five scoreless innings. He allowed only two hits while striking out five Cardinal batters. Through 15.1 innings pitched in Greeneville Almengo has maintained a 0.59 ERA.

The Astros will take on the Cardinals again on Tuesday, August 18th at Pioneer Park in a game that will decide the winner of the three-game series as well as the season series. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00pm. Gates will open at 6:00pm.
