Greeneville Astros News Release
Bluefield, WV - The Greeneville Astros (12-13) began a three-game series against the Bluefield Blue Jays (14-12) on Wednesday night at Bowen Field. Although the Astros made a late rally, a four-run fourth inning by the Blue Jays was too much to overcome as Bluefield held on for a 5-3 win.
Each team began with a run on the scoreboard in the second inning. First, Jacob Nottingham singled and stole second to get into scoring position for the Astros. Then, with two outs, Yonathan Mejia singled on a line drive into center field to score Nottingham and put the Astros up 1-0. However, the Blue Jays answered with a Rolando Segovia RBI double in the bottom of the inning to tie the game at 1-1.
Two innings later, in the bottom of the fourth, the Blue Jays took the lead. It began with Bluefield getting a sacrifice fly from Segovia with the bases loaded. Then, a RBI single from Jesus Gonzalez and a two-run single by Austin Davis followed to put the Blue Jays on top, 5-1.
Astros' relievers Krishawn Holley and Joshua James would hold the Blue Jays without another baserunner for the rest of the game. Holley retired the side in order in the fifth inning, and then James sent the Blue Jays three up, three down the rest of the way while picking up three strikeouts.
In the ninth inning, the Astros got a leadoff double from Jason Martin and an Antonio Nunez walk. Then, a sacrifice fly moved Martin to third before Trent Woodward hit a two-run triple on a line drive to center field to cut the Blue Jays lead to 5-3. However, with the tying run at the plate, the final two batters struck out for the Astros to end the game.
Jesus Tinoco (W, 1-3), the Blue Jays starting pitcher, went the first six innings, gave up one run on two hits, and struck out six to earn the win. Meanwhile, Dusty Isaacs picked up the save after he pitched the final 0.2 innings, gave up one hit, and struck out two.
The Astros will face the Blue Jays in game two of their three-game series on Thursday night. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05pm.
