November 3, 2007 - American Basketball Association (ABA) News Release

Question: What is the proper way to warm-up prior to athletic participation?

Answer: This is a topic that is hotly debated. The old standard we were all taught was that you should stretch your muscles before you play any sports, and if you don't, you will be more likely to injure yourself. There is now research that shows static stretching may not be as beneficial as once thought in terms of performing a warm-up prior to athletic activity. While static stretching will increase flexibility, it should be considered a part of your warm-up.

The best way to warm up your muscles, over all others like heat packs, modalities, and stretching, is to move your body! Movement or active warm-ups will increase the blood flow to muscles and prepare them for your activity. An active warm-up should include sports specific activities as well as movements that will activate the core and initiate the correct firing sequence of motor patterns. If you have a question, email Chris Hart at chart@corechicago.org or visit www.abalive.com.

Note: OurSports Central no longer actively covers the American Basketball Association (ABA) as a professional league due in part to its inability to publish and play a schedule and the transitory nature of many of its teams.
