Ask the CEO
July 28, 2006 - American Basketball Association (ABA) News Release
Question from Ronnie W., Los Angeles and others: (combined): "Why do you think the ABA gets "bashed" so much by the other basketball leagues? I dare you to answer this question on Ask the CEO.
Answer: Ronnie. I'm not sure why it was necessary to dare me to answer the question. And to all of you who wrote similar questions, it is a valid question. Unfortunately, I do not have a good answer (unusual in itself). Why the other leagues focus their bitterness and anger on the ABA instead of going about their own business I don't know. You'll notice that we do not "bash" the other leagues and do not participate in the type of rhetoric and bitterness that they display. There is plenty of room for good quality professional basketball at affordable prices. The other leagues should concentrate on developing their product. I cannot imagine the people at Wal-Mart bashing Target or K-Mart or the people at McDonalds bashing Burger King or Wendys. And vice versa. For some reason, the other leagues get great joy in taking shots at the ABA. Perhaps there's a reason that after 100 years combined, the other leagues have 20-25 teams, and in the last four years the ABA has 60 and will have nearly 80 in 2007. It's interesting that the other leagues bash the ABA, and spend the bulk of their time recruiting ABA teams to their leagues. I think it would be best if the other leagues did a little introspection and made some adjustments to their models. There is a reason for a history of failed teams, no growth - and perhaps it starts with a little more ethics and morality as a basis for their business. (Oops, I bashed them, sorry). If you have a question, email joenewman@abalive.com.
Note: OurSports Central no longer actively covers the American Basketball Association (ABA) as a professional league due in part to its inability to publish and play a schedule and the transitory nature of many of its teams. For information on professional minor leagues, please see OSC's basketball section.
