July 22, 2006 - American Basketball Association (ABA) News Release
Question from Lamont G (and many others, combined): "Now that the Gary Steelheads have folded (in the other league), would you consider putting an ABA team in Gary?
Lamont: Thanks for the questions. I am always amazed at how fast news travels. I had heard that the Steelheads had folded but did not know for sure if this was true. Evidently it is because of the large number of questions I received. First, let me say that I am sorry that this happened. The City of Gary needs quality entertainment and sports and the positive image that a professional basketball team can provide. It is a shame. We have spoken with many people in Gary about putting an ABA team there. With teams in Peoria, South Chicago and Hammond, I would have to discuss this with the owners prior to any decision being made about a team in Gary. Meantime, I hope that you and the other fans in Gary will attend ABA games in Peoria, South Chicago and Hammond and see why the ABA has grown as it has. It is the most exciting, fast-paced professional basketball and entertainment in the US - the league is fan friendly, the prices are affordable. There is a difference between the two leagues which is why we have over 60 teams and will be well over 80 in 2007. Again. fans in Gary, thanks for your emails and comments, very heartwarming. If you have a question, please email joenewman@abalive.com.
Note: OurSports Central no longer actively covers the American Basketball Association (ABA) as a professional league due in part to its inability to publish and play a schedule and the transitory nature of many of its teams. For information on professional minor leagues, please see OSC's basketball section.
