July 7, 2006 - American Basketball Association (ABA) News Release

Questions from Steve T, Sydney, Australia: "Is it possible for an Australian who would like to play in your league to do so? Would I be able to tryout for teams? Is it just too hard for teams to pick up an international player?"

Answer: Steve and other international players. Yes, it is possible for Australian players and other international players to play in the ABA. Teams are very eager to add an international flavor to their teams and encourage good players to come here to play. And yes, you would be able to tryout for a team. The best thing to do is watch the web site, check out the various tryout camps and contact teams of interest. It is not difficult for teams to pick up an international player; there are many in the league in the U.S. plus we have teams in Canada and Mexico also. The quality of players in the ABA is very good. You do need great skills and a good work ethic to make an ABA team. But, if you have these things (and from your resume Steve, you do), the ABA is a great place to play. Thanks for the question. If you have a question, email joenewman@abalive.com.

Note: OurSports Central no longer actively covers the American Basketball Association (ABA) as a professional league due in part to its inability to publish and play a schedule and the transitory nature of many of its teams. For information on professional minor leagues, please see OSC's basketball section.
