June 28, 2006 - American Basketball Association (ABA) News Release

Question from Jerry C, Jacksonville: "Now you've announced Orlando. How many more teams will you be announcing this season?"

Answer: Jerry. Thank you for the email and question. We have closed expansion for the 2006 season and are now taking reservations for the 2007 season. However, we have not announced several 2006 teams yet as some are in the process of getting their venues arranged, others are putting together their organizations. We will announce another team on Friday and another on Monday for 2006, and a couple shortly thereafter.

The reason for the rapid growth (the other part of your comments) is that the ABA has not only put together the best business model in professional sports (which is good for the ABA), but has put together a sports and entertainment package at affordable prices second to none (which is good for the fans). When you have a program that benefits both the fans and the teams, you have a win-win situation.

By having this large number of teams as we do, we will give over 700 players a chance to play professionally this season and over 120 coaches a chance to coach professionally, and over 350 refs a chance to ref plus hundreds of people employed in professional sports. We will lower travel costs to the teams. And most of all, we will give fans in three countries (US, Mexico and Canada) an opportunity to see exciting professional basketball and entertainment at affordable prices. So, Jerry, get set for more announcements. If you have a question, please email joenewman@abalive.com.

Note: OurSports Central no longer actively covers the American Basketball Association (ABA) as a professional league due in part to its inability to publish and play a schedule and the transitory nature of many of its teams. For information on professional minor leagues, please see OSC's basketball section.
