May 26, 2006 - American Basketball Association (ABA) News Release
Question from BZ, Mexico City: "Have you ever considered inviting international teams to play in the ABA playoffs?"
Answer: BZ. Thank you for the question. It is a timely question. The subject will be discussed at the ABA League Meeting in Chicago on June 10th. We have had several inquiries from several countries asking if the ABA would consider the idea. It would be extremely interesting to have at least one team from Europe, Latin America, Asia and Africa compete in the ABA playoffs. The quality of basketball abroad is very good as can be evidenced by the impact that international players are making in the NBA and in world championship tournaments. I have responded to the inquiries thus far positively but want to make sure that the ABA team owners are comfortable with the concept. Meantime, the ABA will welcome additional inquiries from countries throughout the world about having international teams compete in our playoffs next season. Thank you for the question.
If you represent an international team or league and are interested, or if you have a question, email joenewman@abalive.com.
Note: OurSports Central no longer actively covers the American Basketball Association (ABA) as a professional league due in part to its inability to publish and play a schedule and the transitory nature of many of its teams. For information on professional minor leagues, please see OSC's basketball section.
