Asheville Altitude News Release
Asheville, N.C., Jan. 17, 2004 - The Asheville Altitude continued their TV success in a dominating 119-94 victory over the Fayetteville Patriots at the Asheville Civic Center Saturday night to earn their second home win of the season and remain undefeated (5-0) in televised games.
Asheville had their best offensive showing of the season, shooting 57.2% from the field, while Fayetteville shot 50.8%. Many of their buckets came from close-range as they posted 62 points in the paint to Fayetteville's 30. The Altitude took care of the ball as well, committing only nine turnovers while taking advantage of 20 Patriot miscues.
"I thought the second half was the best defense we've played," said Head Coach Joey Meyer. "If we play with a little more urgency on the defensive end, I think we can be a really good team."
Player of the Game Desmond Penigar paced Asheville with a game high 28 points for the second consecutive night, on 12-of-22 shooting. Penigar wasn't the only Altitude player putting up big numbers as five others scored in double figures.
"They're doing a good job of feeding me the ball when I'm hot," said Desmond Penigar. "We try to get the ball to whoever is feeling it and I guess you can say I'm kind of in a zone right now and they're getting me the ball."
Lavor Postell, coming off of a 0-for-9 shooting performance last night, poured in 16 points, connecting on 50% of his shots (6-12). Rusty LaRue (5-of-5) and Kris Lang (6-of-6) were both perfect from the field and finished with 16 points and 12 points, respectively. Greg Stevenson continued his impressive play with 14 points and two steals.
All of the Fayetteville starters reached double figures in scoring in the losing effort. Britton Johnsen led the way for the Patriots with 20 points before fouling out of the game in the fourth quarter. Omar Cook contributed his second consecutive double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Jason Capel chipped in 15 points and Darrell Johns and Bryan Lucas each added 13. Lucas also grabbed 11 rebounds to record his second consecutive double-double. Fayetteville received little help from its short bench, who was outscored by Asheville's reserves 55-16.
Asheville hosts their third home game in four days Monday, Jan. 19 when they host the Roanoke Dazzle in the "King Legacy Game", commemorating the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Special tip-off time is at 1:00 p.m.
