Asheville, NC -- Alfred White, president of the Asheville Altitude, was named The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's "2003 Man of the Year". White was honored at the Society's Grande Finale Celebration, presented by Proffitt's, at Pack Place Promenade on Thursday, June 26.

White, who raised $3,878 over an eight-week campaign period was judged solely on a philanthropic basis, where every dollar raised counted as one vote.

"I am honored to receive this absolutely unique honor. All this would not be possible if it were not for William Wilcox who nominated me as a candidate," said White. "It is an honor to represent a society that helps thousands of children and adults that battle blood related cancers."

Local friends, family and businesses supported White's quest for the distinguished crown. White raised money through letter writing campaigns, contributions on his behalf to the Society's live and silent auctions, and penny drives at local businesses.

"I would like to thank all the local business men and woman who supported the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society's campaign as well as, all those who supported my personal campaign" said White. "It is great the Asheville community came together to support this cause."

In addition to overseeing all aspects of the Asheville Altitude operations, White serves on the board of several community organizations, including the Asheville Area Arts Council, South College, YMCA of Western North Carolina, Meals on Wheels of Asheville Buncombe County, Executive Association of Greater Asheville and Centerpoint for Leaders. He is also an Executive Board Member of the Daniel Boone Council of the Boy Scouts of America. Most recently he served as the Steering Committee Chair for the March of Dimes' WalkAmerica 2003, where he guided the local organization to raise funds to fight birth defects.

Gail Johnson, president and co-founder of the Western Carolina Parrot Head Club, was announced The 2003 Leukemia and Lymphoma Society's Woman of the Year.

In addition to receiving this honor both White and Johnson will be featured in the Asheville Citizen-Times and/or the Mountain Express, highlighted on billboards across the Asheville community, recognized on the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's official website, and receive a $500 gift certificate to Proffitt's Department Store.

There were seven candidates in 2003-04 campaign, raising over $15,000, to double last year's fundraising efforts. All proceeds raised by the 2003 Man & Woman of the year candidates will benefit the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.

The Man & Woman of the Year program was launched by a California department store in 1990 that lost a valued employee to leukemia. His co-workers formulated this campaign in his honor. In 2000, over $2 million was raised nationwide. Funds raised are used to provide patient services and funding research for leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma cures.

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, based in White Plains, NY, is the world's largest private health organization concerned solely with finding cures for leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease, and myeloma and improving the quality of life of patients and their families. Since its founding in 1949, over $200 million has been raised for research specifically targeting to the blood-related cancers, contact the Society at (800) 955-4572, or visit www.leukemia-lymphoma.org.
