Asheville Altitude News Release
ASHEVILLE, N.C., March 13, 2004 - The Asheville Altitude remained unstoppable on NBA TV (6-0) as they handed the Columbus Riverdragons a 103-83 loss Saturday night at the Asheville Civic Center in front of season record crowd of 3,211 screaming fans. Desmond Penigar led the Altitude with 17 points and four rebounds, coming off the bench in his second game since returning from a stint with the Orlando Magic. Sedric Webber also poured in 17 points for Columbus.
Asheville dominated throughout the game, gaining control early with a 10-0 run in the first quarter to put them up 14-3, and never letting Columbus gain a lead. Rebounds were key in the victory as the Altitude out-rebounded the Riverdragons 51-30, turning their 17 offensive boards into 15 second chance points.
"I was surprised and proud to see the amount of energy our guys played with since it was their fourth game in five days," said Asheville Head Coach Joey Meyer.
There was balanced scoring as usual for the Altitude as seven players reached double figures and two Asheville big men turned in double-doubles in the win as Antonio Meeking posted 12 points and 10 rebounds and Brandon Kurtz registered 12 points and 11 boards.
Kareem Reid tallied 13 points and handed four assists coming off the bench and Greg Stevenson and Reed Rawlings each chipped in 11 points. Asheville player of the game Brandin Knight added 10 points, seven rebounds and two steals.
"Everybody's sharing the ball and that's how it's supposed to be," said Knight. "We're having fun and when we continue to play together that's when we're most effective."
Columbus experienced a dismal night from three-point land, going 0-11 from long range. They shot 44.0 percent overall on the night. Erron Maxey netted 14 points and four rebounds for Columbus and Jeff Myers and Nick Sheppard contributed 12 points apiece. Kevin Lyde added 11 points for the Riverdragons and Terrence Morris blocked four Asheville shots.
The seesaw battle for position in the league standings continues as Asheville reclaims possession of second place with their win and a Roanoke loss tonight. After playing four games in five days the Altitude will get two days off before hitting the road again to face the Riverdragons again, Tuesday, March 16.
