Army V. Navy Heroes Cup At The Garden Saturday
April 23, 2008 - National Lacrosse League (NLL)
Orlando Titans News Release
New York, N.Y. -- The New York Titans are proud to announce that they will host the first annual "Heroes Cup" featuring Army vs. Navy Alumni on Saturday, April 26. The "Heroes Cup" begins at 5:30pm followed by an 8pm start time for the Titans' final game of the 2008 regular season. The Titans battle the defending champion Rochester Knighthawks.
A portion of the proceeds from ticket sales will be donated to Wounded Warrior Project, a non-profit organization aimed at assisting those men and women of the United States armed forces who have been severely injured during the war on terrorism.
The Army/Navy tradition is a special experience near and dear to those involved. More than 100 alumni lacrosse players from both the United States Military and Naval Academies will participate this year. Taking the field during this time of war, means even more than an on-field victory.
"Each of these men that step on the field have served their country. This game is deeper then just an Alumni game, it's a chance for these players, myself included to reignite that feeling of hunger and rivalry for the game again after many years; all the while knowing that we are raising money for a cause that we and many of our comrades face once returning home from war," stated former Army Lacrosse Team Captain and Wounded Warrior, John Fernandez.
The Wounded Warrior Project also offers services and programs like combat stress seminars, benefits and career counseling, adaptive sports opportunities and advocacy initiatives to aid in the transition from hospital bed to an independent productive life.
For fans interested in purchasing tickets specifically for the Heroes Cup Army vs. Navy Indoor Lacrosse Challenge on April 26th at 5:30pm, log onto www.ticketmaster.com/heroescup and enter the code "HEROES" under "Other Promotions and Special Offers."
The (9-6) Titans will take on the defending champion (8-7) Rochester Knighthawks at 8pm at the Garden on Saturday following the "Heroes Cup" in a game that has major playoff implications for both teams. The team that wins the game clinches a playoff spot. If the Knighthawks lose, they are eliminated from playoff contention entirely. If the Titans lose, they can still clinch a playoff spot if the Toronto Rock defeat the (9-6) Philadelphia Wings on Sunday.
"Rochester is playing really well right now and whoever wins on Saturday deserves to be in the playoffs," said Titans Head Coach Adam Mueller on a media call Wednesday. "Last weekend was an emotional weekend for us, we won both games but on Sunday we woke up and realized we have to win against Rochester this Saturday."
After having defeated the Chicago Shamrox at home last Friday and then the Philadelphia Wings on Saturday for the second time this season, the Titans are heading into their game against the defending champs with confidence.
"The team expects to win now and that's been the biggest change with the Titans this season, they all have confidence this year," Mueller added.
This is the second time the two teams have met this season. The Titans beat the Knighthawks 14-10 on February 23 at Blue Cross Arena.
Going into Saturday's game, the Titans have won eight of their last ten games, they have four players in the top twenty in scoring in the NLL, their starting goalie Matt Vinc is number two in the league in total saves on the season and they are the best team in the league in power play situations.
The Titans play their last regular season game on Saturday, April 26 at 8pm at the Garden, when they take on the Rochester Knighthawks.
