JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Jacksonville Armada FC found out on Wednesday night it will face Premier Development League side The Villages SC in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup third round.
The Villages SC, an amateur club based in The Villages, Fla., did the improbable and defeated professional United Soccer League side Charleston Battery 4-2 in penalty kicks after drawing 2-2 in Charleston, S.C. Billed as a #Cupset on Twitter, the match was one of three on the night where a lower division team defeated a USL club. Earlier in the night, Lansdowne Bhoys FC beat the Pittsburgh Riverhounds, 2-0, which was followed by a Des Moines Menace 2-0 upset of the Tulsa Roughnecks.
The Armada will host The Villages at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, June 1 at Southern Oak Stadium on the campus of Jacksonville University. Armada FC season ticket members are given first priority to claim tickets to the match, which will be a bonus match in their 2016 plan. Any unclaimed tickets will be available for $10 next Wednesday, May 25.
