Cartersville Warriors News Release
Little Rock, Ark. - The Cartersville Warriors never got things going Saturday night and as a result dropped a 105-101 decision to the Arkansas ArchAngels in Little Rock, Ark. The loss snapped the Warriors seven game win streak, and moved Arkansas into contention for a higher seed in the upcoming WBA playoffs.
"It was a frustrating loss," said Cartersville coach David Archer Jr. "Not to take anything away from Arkansas because they're a good team, but we had a bad game collectively. Sometimes, you don't get the breaks when you're on the road and we didn't (Saturday night). We couldn't make any layups and we missed 12 free throws in the second half."
Cartersville (13-4), which now trails Rome by 1 1-2 games in the chase for the No. 1 seed in the World Basketball Association playoffs, started out fast, opening up a 12-2 lead in the first 5:30 of the game. However, even then, the Warriors were missing layups and making turnovers. By the end of the first quarter, Arkansas (10-7) had taken a 21-17 lead. The ArchAngels eventually led by as many as 18 in the second quarter before Cartersville came back in the final 2:30, making a 10-2 run, to get to within 48-40 at the break.
The Warriors tried to trim the Arkansas lead for most of the third quarter, but still were down 77-70 going into the final period. The ArchAngels led by as many as 12 in the fourth quarter before Cartersville made one final push to try and pull out a victory. Mike Dean made a 3-pointer to get the Warriors back to within 99-97 with under a minute to go and Bobby Brown almost had a steal with a chance to tie the game, but he was whistled for a foul and Arkansas held on for the win.
Dean led Cartersville with 24 points, but made just seven of his 23 field goal attempts. Terrence Hill added 20, eight rebounds and five steals, Brown netted 19 and three steals and Ron Dokes finished with 14 and nine rebounds in the loss.
Marcus Campbell came up with a huge effort, scoring 21 points on 10 of 15 shooting from the floor, while Myron Allen quarterbacked the ArchAngels with 17 points and nine assists. Kim Adams also had eight points and 13 rebounds for Arkansas.
Cartersville plays again Thursday, when it hosts the Murfreesboro (Tenn.) Musicians at the J.H. Morgan Gymnasium. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
