Warriors earn road win over undefeated Majic

June 19, 2009 - World Basketball Association (WBA) - Cartersville Warriors News Release

The Cartersville Warriors (6-3, 4-3 World Basketball Association) finally got a WBA win Friday night after three straight losses, and they did it against the best team in the league, beating the previously undefeated Buford Majic, 95-86, in Buford..

"It doesn't matter what level of basketball you're talking about, there's a moment in every season that defines things and hopefully after the season you can point to that moment and say 'That's where things started going right,' and I think this is a moment we'll point at," said Cartersville head coach Cory Baldwin. "We did the things we needed to do in late-game situations against one of the best teams in the league. If we didn't do everything exactly right, we would've lost this game."

The game was back-and forth most of the way, with Cartersville leading 45-40 at halftime before the Majic (6-1) used a strong third quarter to take a six-point lead into the final period. Buford continued to lead until the final 1:30, when the Warriors retook the lead and then held off Buford for a crucial road victory.

"One of the biggest things that helped us win this game tonight was our backcourt defense," said Baldwin. "Buford has three of the best guards in the league, including the league's leading scorer, and we held all of them under 15 points. That was huge and our guards did a good job of shutting them down."

The Warriors used a balanced offensive attack to get the win, with Darnell Cox, Justin Billingslea and Bobby Brown leading the way with 16 points apiece. Jermaine Spivey pitched in 15, Andrew Jones had 14 and Chucky Frierson chipped in 10 for Cartersville, which broke a three-game losing streak in the WBA with the win over Buford.

Cartersville plays again Sunday, hosting the Rome Rage in another WBA contest Sunday afternoon at 4 p.m. The Warriors were scheduled to play Southeast Exposure Basketball League member BC Howren Saturday night, but that game was postponed.
