Cartersville Warriors News Release

The Cartersville Warriors continued their late-season surge Wednesday night, beating the Rome Rage, 88-76, in a world Basketball Association contest in Rome.

The Warriors (8-3, 6-3 WBA) have now won four straight games overall and three straight in the WBA going into their regular-season finale against the Buford Majic Sunday. Meanwhile, Rome's struggles continued as the Rage fell to 0-7 with the loss.

"I think the guys are playing well right now," said Cartersville head coach Cory Baldwin. "We've got our rotation set and everybody really knows their roles on our team. In the games we've won, we've had several different leading scorers and tonight wasn't any different. "

Veteran guard Jermaine Spivey led the Warriors with 20 points and eight assists. Andrew Jones pitched in 18, Bobby Brown finished with 17 and big man Darnell Cox put up a double-double with 14 points, 12 rebounds and five blocks.

"Jermaine has been playing a lot of point guard for us lately and he's really doing a good job of getting everyone involved," said Baldwin. "(Jones) has been one of our top scorers all season, but (Brown) really gave us a spark tonight when we needed it. He hit three 3-pointers that gave us a lift."

Cartersville almost the entire way, opening up a 28-point lead in the third quarter before Rome made a run to close the gap. The Rage got to within seven points with four minutes left in the game, but Cartersville took care of its business down the stretch and held off Rome for the win.

"One of the biggest reasons we won tonight was out defense," said Baldwin. "We held Rome under 80 points again and did a good job on the defensive end of the floor."

Cartersville now closes out its regular season Sunday against the WBA-leading Buford Majic. Tipoff for the game at J.H. Morgan Gymnasium is set for 4 p.m. and after the Warriors beat Buford, 95-86, in Buford on June 19, Baldwin knows Buford will be looking for revenge.

"We know Buford's going to come ready to play," said Baldwin. "We want to play well, hopefully end the regular season on a high note and carry some momentum into the playoffs."
