PEORIA (July 9, 2016) - Despite playing one man down for the final 25 minutes of the match, Arizona United Soccer Club held on for a 1-1 tie with Swope Park Rangers in front of 1,012 fans at the Peoria Sports Complex.
"The second half I thought we played well," said Arizona United Head Coach Frank Yallop. "First half, we didn't move the ball quickly enough. Not a good performance. But for the second half, I thought we actually deserved to win the game in the end. I think the decision to send off Matheus [Silva] was harsh. I haven't seen it. I'll have to look on video. It seemed a bit harsh."
Midfielder Matheus Silva was given a red card and ejected in the 63rd minute, leaving Arizona United with just 10 players to face Swope Park's 11 for the rest of the match.
Although United's best scoring opportunities were already behind them, the defense held up to scratch out the draw and earn a point.
Both of the match's goals were scored in the first half.
Arizona United took the lead just about a half hour into the match. In the 26th minute, Swope Park committed a penalty inside the 18-yard box. Forward Long Tan took the ensuing penalty kick for Arizona United and converted to give the club a 1-0 lead.
But less than five minutes later, United was called for a handball in the 18-yard box. That gave the Rangers a penalty kick of their own. Forward Kris Tyrpak stepped up for Swope Park and beat the Arizona United goalkeeper to make it 1-1.
"We can play better than that, I think," Yallop said. "We are more capable of better things. But again, the game dictates it. It's a tough game. We got to hand it to the opposition. They made it difficult for us, tightened their 4-4-2, and made it hard. Never easy."
Arizona United is now unbeaten in their last four home matches. The club last lost at home on May 21. Arizona United returns to the Peoria Sports Complex on Saturday, July 16 against Seattle Sounders FC 2. That match will kickoff at 7:30 P.M.
