Area High Schools to Play at Fifth Third Field
March 26, 2008 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Dayton Dragons News Release
DAYTON, OH - For the third consecutive season, the Dayton Dragons will play host to high school baseball, as 48 area high school teams will play one of their regular season games at Fifth Third Field.
The 24 games will showcase 48 local teams throughout April and May while the Dragons are away at other Midwest League cities. Admission is free, and concession stands will be open so that fans can enjoy a full day at the ballpark.
"These are some of my favorite events of the year at Fifth Third Field," said Dragons President Robert Murphy. "Who knows? We might see some of these student-athletes back here in Dragons uniforms someday."
What began as an 11-game event in 2006 has more than doubled in just three seasons to the current schedule of 24 games. Every available game slot for the 2008 schedule was filled in less than a week this season.
"When your players ask if we are going to play at Fifth Third again next year, you know it is special," Northmont Head Coach Chuck Harlow told the Dragons last season. "I had players ask me before we got off the bus."
The games are open - free of charge - to all fans and media wanting to attend the event. The matchup between Butler and Northmont had the largest attendance last season with over 1,100 fans in attendance. The two teams match up again and will try to set a new attendance record on Thursday, May 1st this season.
The high schools are able to provide their own PA announcers, cheer squads, national anthem singers, and some schools even bring their own radio broadcasters to the ballpark. Participating high schools sell Dragons tickets to help raise money for their programs.
"You can't beat the hometown flavor. I even had butterflies," Centerville Head Coach Terry Dickten told the Dayton Daily News. "These annual games at this venue will pick Miami Valley baseball up. These games will attract people of all ages that maybe normally can't get a Dragons ticket. They can come out and enjoy this environment."
