November 14, 2018 - Prospect League (Prospect)
West Virginia Miners News Release

A pair of players, catcher Bill Cooper from Mt. Vernon Nazarene University and pitcher Nick Turnbull of the University of Maryland, are the latest signees for the West Virginia Miners for the 2019 Prospect League season. The November 14 announcement by the team brings the total to nine of players committed to the Miners to date for next summer. When Cooper joins the Miners in 2019, it will be after completing his sophomore collegiate baseball season at Mount Vernon (OH) Nazarene University, a member school of both NAIA D-II and the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA). He saw ample playing time for the Cougars during his 2018 freshman season, appearing in 27 games (19 starts) and hitting for a .250 batting average (18-for-72). His totals also included 2 doubles, a triple, a homer, and scoring 7 runs while driving in 8 more. He is a 2017 graduate of Jackson (OH) High School.

Although he will be listed on the Miners roster as a junior, Turnbull will join the team after finishing his first season in the spring of 2019 in NCAA D-I as a member of the University of Maryland Terrapins of the Atlantic Coast Conference.

Prior to that, in 2018, the 6-6, 205-pound right-hander put up very respectable numbers during a sophomore season that was spent at Harford Community College. There he posted an unblemished 4-0 record that also saw him strike out 29 hitters versus allowing 17 walks in 26.0 innings on the mound. His earned run average that season for the Fighting Owls was 3.81 and he also had a strikeout per 9 innings ratio of 10.04.

He is a resident of Churchville, MD and is a graduate of John Carroll High School, where he played three years of varsity baseball and was a team captain for his senior season. Baseball runs in his family as his father Joe played professional baseball as a member of the Pittsburgh Pirates' organization.
