Florida Seals News Release
KISSIMMEE, Fla. - Fans of the Florida Seals hockey team were hoping for a little more Saturday Night magic.
Instead, it was Jacksonville's Jeff Angelidis who turned the trick on the home team.
Angelidis had four goals while teammate Ryan Webb scored twice to lead the Barracudas to a convincing 9-5 victory Saturday night at the Silver Spurs Arena.
"It was one of those lucky nights when you get to the net and it goes in," Angelidis said after his performance. "We worked hard. It was a long bus ride in (from Knoxville) but we're glad to get the two points."
The feudal blood between the Cudas and the Seals was evident as Jacksonville's Caleb Moffatt and Florida's Chris Bain dropped the gloves a scant four seconds after the opening face-off. That was followed three seconds later by a bout between Cedric Bernier of the Seals and Corey Graboski of the Barracudas.
Angelidis opened the scoring at 4:25 when he walked out of the corner and beat Florida goalie Terry Denike. The Seals defense opened up again seven minutes later and Webb took advantage, walking off the half boards and scoring through Denike. Jacksonville was able to double that 2-0 lead to 4-0 by the end of the period thanks to the power play. Patrick Doherty got to the front of the net and scored while the Cudas had a two man advantage. 33 seconds later, Guy Come capped the period with a power play goal that left the home fans in stunned silence.
"We've been pretty fortunate. It was a real sloppy game tonight," Barracudas Head Coach Rick Allain said. "Fortunately we got a couple more bounces go into their net than went into ours."
Things got worse for the Seals four minutes into the second when Angelidis turned the Florida defense and went between Denike's pads for a 5-0 margin. Florida got that one back when Rob Sich finally solved Cudas goalie Darcy Munro, firing a shot home as he was being crushed to the ice. Before the end of the period, Angelidis completed his hat trick, coming out of the penalty and taking a lead pass and going in alone to score and give the visitors a 6-1 lead after two.
"Trophies are definitely not handed out in November. For some reason my teams start out slow," Seals Head Coach Tommy Stewart said. "We're in a rut. We've just got to work harder at practice and work hard during games. We showed lots of guts in the third period."
Whatever was said in the Florida locker room worked because the Seals came out storming the Jacksonville end. Kahlil Thomas began the comeback seven seconds into the third, taking the puck in and beating Munro. A little over two minutes later, Phil Gianfrancesco grabbed a lose puck and went high over a sprawled Munro to bring Florida within 6-3. Ryan Coghlan cut the Jacksonville lead to 6-4 when he rifled a blast home from just inside the blue line.
The Barracudas regrouped and extended their lead to 7-4 when Come fed Jason Cassells who beat Denike through a screen. Justin Keller trimmed the margin to 7-5 when he banked a shot from behind the goal line and into the net. That would be as close as the Seals would get as Angelidis tallied his fourth on a power play and Webb added his second of the night to produce the final score.
The Seals are off until Thursday when they host the Richmond Renegades at the Silver Spurs Arena. It is the first "Thirsty Thursday" of the season and it is also "BellSouth Real Yellow Pages Magnetic Schedule Night". Game time is 7:35 P.M.
