Portland Pirates News Release
PORTLAND, ME - The Portland Pirates and Anaheim Ducks announced today that the National Hockey League (NHL) club has signed defenseman Eric Weinrich to a one-year AHL contract.
Weinrich, 40 (12/19/66), started last season as an assistant coach for the Portland Pirates (AHL) after announcing his retirement on August 7, 2006. On January 25, 2007, Weinrich relinquished his duties behind the bench and became the oldest active player in the American Hockey League. He played in 36 games during the 2006-07 season and registered 14 points (2 goals, 12 assists).
"I am excited about extending my career and even more excited about doing it here in my home state with the Pirates," said Weinrich.
Prior to his 18-year NHL playing career, Weinrich played at the University of Maine and registered 69 points (16 goals, 54 assists) in 83 games over three seasons with the Black Bears. In 1987, he was named to the Hockey East First All-Star Team and also earned NCAA honors as a member of the NCAA East Second All-American Team. The following year he played on the US Olympic Team. Previous to his college career, he spent two seasons at North Yarmouth Academy (NYA) in Yarmouth, Maine.
Weinrich was originally drafted by the New Jersey Devils (2nd round, 32nd overall) in the 1985 NHL Entry Draft. The 40 year-old competed for 18 seasons at the NHL level with Boston, Chicago, Hartford, Montreal, New Jersey, Philadelphia, St. Louis and most recently with Vancouver. He has participated in nine World Championships for Team USA - the most of any American-born player and played in the 1988 Olympics, the 1991 Canada Cup and the 2004 World Cup.
Season ticket plans for the 2007-08 season are now on sale at the Pirates office, located at 94 Free Street in Portland. Ticket plans start at just $60.
