An off Day Well Spent
February 22, 2011 - Premier Basketball League (PBL)
Rochester RazorSharks News Release
Seventy kids got to play a little basketball in the Big House Tuesday morning. They were guests of the Rochester RazorSharks and the Boys and Girls Club of Rochester. The Club sponsored an essay writing contest on the importance of school. Participants were selected on the basis of those essays.
In what would normally be a day off for the Premier Basketball League teams following a game on Monday night, all 13 of the RazorSharks showed up at the Blue Cross Arena to work with the kids. Among them a Boys and Girls Club Alum, point guard Melvin Council.
"It feels real good to see the kids from the club get out and learn new stuff from the rest of the team," claims Council. "They love the RazorSharks. They ask every day I work about each player."
The relationship between the Boys and Girls Club has never been stronger.
"It's been great," said Boys and Girls Club executive director Duane Mahoney. "The team supports us in many different ways. Sometimes they practice at the club so the kids get to see phenomenal players. They have opportunities for the kids to come to different games. Even when the Division One college game with St. Bonaventure was here, the team was nice enough to get tickets for the kids to be able to attend that game. They've really done a lot to support the kids at the club."
The two and a half hour clinic was co-sponsored by Staples, which helped provide six Kindle wireless reading devices valued at close to 200 dollars each. They were presented to six of the kids by RazorShark players.
MVP Healthcare was the event's second underwriter.
"Youth sports are a great way to encourage kids to get a lot of physical activity, to eat well, to have good role models in the community," said Julie Ferreira, a field market manager for MVP. "They're going to listen to these sports personalities before they listen to their own parents in many cases."
Channels 10 and 13 provided television coverage to the event.
"This is something these kids are going to talk about for a long time," said Reggie Smith of the Boys and Girls Club. "A long time."
