An Empire State of Mind

July 27, 2011 - Indoor Football League (IFL)
Binghamton News Release

BINGHAMTON - The end of July is often one of the slowest times for an indoor football team. With the United Bowl Championship in the hands of the Sioux Falls Storm, the off season commenced and there was a bit of anticipation on where the first expansion team for 2012 would be placed. Yesterday, it was revealed to the football world however that the expansion path for next season would surely be running through Upstate New York.

As if that wasn't enough hype for one afternoon, Matt Custer, GM of Binghamton Indoor Football was pleased to announce a name familiar to some in the region as the first signing in Binghamton Indoor Football history.

Hasan Stewart, a 6' 200 pound defensive back from Hempstead, NY will join the Binghamton defensive backfield for the 2012 season in the IFL. "I'm very excited. Being signed to a new team means I'm able to set the standards for years to come. I believe my presence can help the team be a force in the team's inaugural season," Hasan said through a phone call after the signing on Tuesday.

Hasan is a local product, as he attended Stony Brook University and had a standout four-year career for the Seawolves. He comes to the Southern Tier with knowledge of the indoor game, as he was part of the Lehigh Valley Steelhawks in the 2011 season. "There's nothing like playing in your home state. Being able to play in front of my home fans allows for extra emphasis on the reasons to perform well and win," said Stewart.

He becomes the first signing for a team that has hopes of competing for a United Bowl Championship next spring. The Indoor Football League was created in 2008 from a merger between the Intense Football League and United Indoor Football Association. It consists of 27 teams (23 active, 4 dormant) located across the United States from Alaska to Richmond, VA.
