Rochester Americans News Release

(Rochester, NY)... Brayden Irwin scored twice, including the eventual game-winner with just under seven minutes remaining in the third period, as the Rochester Americans held off the league-leading Syracuse Crunch for a 4-3 win Wednesday night at The Blue Cross Arena. The Amerks withstood Syracuse's late-game rally to garner the win and improve their season record with their I-90 rivals to 3-4-0-0 after dropping their last meeting with the Crunch on Sunday.

The win is the Amerks second in consecutive days, improving the overall record to 24-29-4-0.

Irwin's two goals increase his total to 13 on the season, and the veteran forward now has 25 points to tie his career-best from 2013-14 with the Amerks. Zac Dalpe added his team-leading 16th score of the season in the third period, and Jerome Leduc added a goal for the second straight game for Rochester.

Brady Austin, Tim Schaller and Jerry D'Amigo all finished with two assists on the night for the Amerks, with Austin's multi-point night serving as the first of his professional career. Matt Hackett won his second game in two days with a 27-save effort.

Yanni Gourde, Joey Mormina and Vladislav Namestnikov all scored for Syracuse, and Andrei Vasilevskiy stopped 30 shots in net after being reassigned to the Crunch earlier in the day from the parent Tampa Bay Lightning.

Syracuse opened the scoring with 8:26 left in the opening period when Mormina slid a pass over to the far-side of the net to Gourde, who converted the slam dunk to put the Crunch up 1-0.

Leduc broke open the scoring for the Amerks just 2:28 later on the power-play off of a one-timer from the top of the left circle that snuck through Vasilevskiy's pads to even the score at one apiece.

The Amerks took their first lead of the night late in the second period with a perfect execution of a give-and-go play in front of the Syracuse net, when Schaller curled and served up a pass through the slot to Irwin, who flipped the puck over Vasilevskiy and into the net.

Dalpe added some insurance for the Amerks on a play started by rookie William Carrier. After collecting a loose puck just inside the Rochester blueline, Carrier dodged a Syracuse defenseman and fired a back-door pass to Dalpe, who tapped the puck home to put Rochester ahead 3-1 with 12:10 left in the third period.

Irwin netted his second of the game with just 6:47 remaining in regulation after one-timing a pass from D'Amigo in the high slot that pinballed off of a defender and in to put the Amerks in front by three scores.

Goals from Mormina and Namestnikov late in the third period for Syracuse inched the Crunch closer to tying the game, but that was as close as the visitors would get.

The Amerks bring the month of February to a close on Friday, Feb. 27 when they host the Toronto Marlies in a North Division showdown at The Blue Cross Arena. The 7:05 p.m. matchup will be the sixth of 10 meetings between the two teams this season and will be broadcast live on FOX Sports 1280 Rochester.
