Americans Drop One To Defending Champion Texas 5-2 As Rivalry Heats Up

NORTH RICHLAND HILLS, Texas - The Allen Americans lost to the defending CHL champion Texas Brahmas 5-2 at the NYTEX Sports Centre tonight. The Americans are 2-1-1 in the season series and 15-5-1 (31 points) overall. Despite the loss, Allen is still second place in the league.

The rivalry between the Metroplex neighbors was in full swing tonight when the two teams traded punches during warm-ups. Americans' forward Britt Dougherty and defenseman Brandon Straub, along with Brahmas' defenseman Luke Sellars and forward James Heibert, received game misconducts for their pregame actions.

Texas' Scott Thauwald got on the board first at 4:39 on the power play to put the Brahmas up 1-0. Then, Tyler Skworchinski gave the Brahmas a two-goal lead at 14:08. The Americans headed to the locker room down 2-0.

Allen put offensive pressure on goaltender Joe Palmer but couldn't covert any scoring opportunities in the second. The club limited the Brahmas to four shots, but Texas still managed to net two goals off odd-man rushes from Skworchinski and A.J. Gale.

The Americans found the back of the cage in the third when defenseman Ryan Fairbarn scored his fourth goal of the season on the power play to make the score 4-1. Nino Musitelli had an assist on the goal, which extended his point streak to 15 games, the longest point streak in the league. Thauwald scored his second goal of the night at 15:34 to regain the Brahmas' four-goal lead. Then, Tobias Whelan scored his third shorthanded goal of the year to make it 5-2.

Allen outshot Texas 31-25. Newcomer Kris Tebbs saw ice time for the first time when he replaced goalie Chris Whitley after the second period. Whitley made nine saves tonight, while Tebbs had 11.

Prior to the game, forward Jarret Lukin and defenseman Jordie Benn were activated from IR. Also, defenseman Erik Adams was placed on 14-day IR, and forward Mike Willemsen was placed on waivers.

Up next for the Americans is a two-game home stand this weekend, Dec. 11 and 12 against Tulsa and Laredo, respectively.
