American Association Game Recaps
May 25, 2014 - American Association (AA) News Release
Amarillo 6, Sioux City 4
With the help of a three-run homerun by RF Cory Patton, the Amarillo Sox surged past the Sioux City Explorers in the seventh inning to claim a 6-4 win in Sioux City.
Patton, who was 2-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored, homered in the seventh inning to score 2B Josh Miller - who went 2-for-4 in the game - and SS Charlie Mirabel. That swing turned a 4-3 deficit into a 6-4 lead which the Sox would hold throughout the remainder of the game. On the mound, Reliever Matt Larkins was credited with the win for the four pitches he threw to close of the seventh inning. Greg Holt earned the save for shutting the door in the bottom of the ninth.
At the plate for the Explorers, three batters - CF Michael Lang, 1B Luke Murton and C Dillon Usiak - had two hits and one RBI.
St. Paul 3, Sioux Falls 2
The St. Paul Saints snatched the lead with a seventh-inning rally and held off the Sioux Falls Canaries to seal a home win 3-2 Sunday afternoon.
The Saints opened up the scoring and took an early lead thanks to a solo homerun from DH Willie Cabrera in the second inning. Cabrera was the Saints leading hitter on the night as he went 3-for-4. Sioux Falls responded in the top of the third inning with a single from LF Brandon Jones that scored SS Stephen Branca and RF Steven Tinoco. Tinoco had a pair of hits in the ball game and Branca had a team-high three.
St. Paul scored the pair of runs that claimed the lead in the seventh after an infield single from 3B Joe Bonfe and a throwing error on the same play. Both teams saw solid outings from their starting pitcher as Joe Bircher and Anthony Claggett pitched into the seventh inning and they both allowed just two earned runs.
Kansas City 7, Fargo-Moorhead 3
The Kansas City T-Bones put together a balanced attack at the plate Sunday evening as each of the nine batters in the order had at least one hit and that production led to a 7-3 win over the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks.
The RedHawks had the lead early after they scored a run in each of the first two innings but the T-Bones erased that deficit quickly with a five-run sixth inning. That rally was capped off by a three-run homerun by 3B T.J. Mittlestaedt, his first of the young season. 2B Danny Richar, who scored on Mittlestaedt's dinger, had two RBI of his own as he was one of four T-Bones to have two hits in the game.
For the RedHawks, RF Tim Alberts and DH Travis Higgs each went 2-for-4. On the bump for the T-Bones, starter Daniel Barone picked up the win as he went 6.1 innings and allowed just three earned runs on eight hits while striking out four batters. Reliever Jared Messer earned an eight-out save for closing out the contest.
