
Amarillo Sox Set 2012 Schedule

AMARILLO, TX - In conjunction with the American Association of Independent Professional Baseball, the Amarillo Sox Baseball Club released their full 2012 schedule today, home opener slated for Friday, May 18.
The American Association kicks off league play on Thursday, May 17 with the Amarillo Sox officially beginning their season with a ten-game home stand starting Friday, May 18, when they welcome the Winnipeg Goldeyes for a three-game series before the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks and Laredo Lemurs visit for 3-game and 4-game series, respectively, concluding the season opening stand on Sunday, May 27 with something different, a day game.
The Sox will play a 100-game schedule, 50 at the Amarillo National Bank Sox Stadium, with the season concluding on the road with a three-game series with the AirHogs in Grand Prairie, September 1-3. Sox home games will begin at 7:05pm Monday thru Saturday and 6:05pm for Sunday contests with the exception of the Sunday, May 27 game against the Laredo Lemurs which will start at 2:05pm, to accommodate travel schedule to Winnipeg (Manitoba, Canada).
With the departure of the Fort Worth Cats and Shreveport-Bossier Captains and arrival of the Laredo Lemurs, the American Association will have a new look this year competing with 13 teams. Along with the Lemurs, the American Association also introduced interleague play for 2012 with five teams from the Canadian American Association of Professional Baseball, better known as the Can-Am League. The five Can-Am teams slated for interleague contests include the New Jersey Jackals, Worcester Tornadoes, Rockland Boulders, Newark Bears and Quebec les Capitales.
"We are excited to be able to bring both leagues together. It will provide new competition, and fans will be able to see a variety of teams from both the United States and Canada", American Association and Can-Am League commissioner Miles Wolff said.
As part of the new interleague format, five American Association teams will play 10 road games in Can-Am League ballparks and likewise, five Can-Am teams will make one 10-game road trip to AA cities. Amarillo will also host the Worcester Tornadoes, hailing from Worcester Massachusetts, for a four-game series from July 3-6 as part of an eight-game home stand, that includes a July 4th celebration, before the Wichita Wingnuts visit town for a four-game series starting Friday, July 7 and concludes on Tuesday, July 10 to round out the home stand. While all the games against the Can-Am League teams will count in the standings, the leagues will hold separate post season schedules.
The American Association will remain a three division league, North, Central and South. The Sox will remain in the South Division along with El Paso Diablos, Grand Prairie AirHogs and Laredo Lemurs. The North Division includes Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks, Sioux Falls Fighting Pheasants and Winnipeg Goldeyes. The Central Division consists of the Gary South Shore RailCats, Kansas City T-Bones, Lincoln Saltdogs, Sioux City Explorers, and Wichita Wingnuts. For the second consecutive year the season will be a continuous schedule, with no halves, and the playoffs schedule consisting of the three division winners and a wild card team, which will be the team with the best overall record among the non-division winners.
