THE STAKES: After 4 consecutive wins, the Dusters have climbed back into the early-season playoff race in the Midwest Division, and currently sit in 3rd place. They seek to get their 5th consecutive victory of the season, and avenge 3 devastating losses to the Xplorers in 2005. Memphis won the af2 Championship in 2005. The Xplorers aim to improve on their 6-2 record, and to continue their winning ways against the Dusters.
COACH PERDUE'S THOUGHTS ON MEMPHIS:
"They are fundamentally sound in what they do, and they get after the quarterback. Brian Jones is very elusive, and we have to contain him if we do flush him out of the pocket. He can hurt you with his feet. We've been very solid on special teams this year, and we can't let Kevin Prentiss get going in the return game. We have to find consistency and a rhythm on offense, and keep doing what we've been doing on defense. Our crowd should play a factor in the game as well."
BROUSSARD DOES IT HIS WAY:
Dusters' WR/DB Michael Broussard enters Sunday afternoon's game as the leading receiver on the team with 22 receptions. Oddly enough, the former all-state high school runningback does not have a single receiving touchdown. He's done it all on the ground, as he has 7 rushing touchdowns this season, good for 6th overall in af2.
KEY MATCHUP: QUARTERBACK PLAY
Two of the top passers in af2 will face off on Sunday in Amarillo, with playoff positioning at stake. Dusters' QB Steve Panella has quietly been efficient this season, throwing 24 touchdowns with 0 interceptions through 7 games. His counterpart for the Xplorers is veteran af2 quarterback Brian Jones. Jones led the Xplorers to the af2 championship in 2005, and has returned in 2006 putting up great numbers again. He has 40 touchdowns and 3 interceptions through the air, and has 8 rushing touchdowns on the ground as well. Both quarterbacks will face a tremendous pass rush on Saturday night, and must play mistake-free football in order to come away victorious.
