Asheville Altitude News Release
Asheville, N.C., March 15, 2003 - The Asheville Altitude wrapped up their regular season home schedule with a 71-67 win over the Columbus Riverdragons, Saturday night at the Asheville Civic Center. Asheville, entering the contest two games behind the fourth placed Revelers, increases their chance for a playoff spot with their second consecutive victory.
Yearly superlatives opened the contest as NBDL Player Personnel Director, Milt Newton, presented Jeff Trepagnier and Larry Abney with league honors at center court. Trepagnier, the team's leading scorer and league leader in steals, was selected to the NBDL's first team as Abney, the only Altitude player to start every contest this season, received the league's honorable mention.
Coming off an impressive 83-79 victory over Mobile Friday night, the Riverdragons exploded in the third quarter to outscore the Altitude 21-8 and take a 12-point lead by the quarter's end.
But by the fourth quarter Asheville's Trepagnier took over the game and led the Altitude to an electrifying 25-4 rally and their final regular season home win in front of a screaming crowd.
"I'm very proud of our fans and our guys," said head coach Joey Meyer. "They really showed up tonight, made the big baskets and pulled out a big win."
Trepagnier led all scorers with 27 points and four steals. Lee Scruggs scored his sixth double-double of the season, second straight, with 14 points and 12 rebounds. Forward David Evans, competing in his second contest, won the hearts of fan's as they showered him with a standing ovation upon his final bow. A practice player on the team just five day's ago, he grabbed nine rebounds and scored four points in 17 minutes of play to give the team their final page to a storybook home finish.
"I've had a lot of support from my family, friends and the fans," Evans said. "I wanted to just play hard, and take this advantage of this opportunity to help my team get a win."
Nate Johnson led the Riverdragons with 18 points and six rebounds. Tyrone Washington added with 12 points and Shaun Igo chipped in eight points and eight rebounds. Sean Daugherty fell short of his second double-double of the season scoring nine points and grabbing eight rebounds.
