
Altitude To Host NBDL Draft Reception

Asheville, NC., October 25, 2002 - The Asheville Altitude will host an NBDL Draft Reception on, Halloween, from 5-7 p.m. at Overtime Sports Bar and Grill located inside the Best Western Asheville Biltmore Hotel. Open to the public, the event provide fans, season ticket holders, corporate partners and local media an opportunity to listen via conference call as the Altitude's coaching staff make their 2002 player selections.
"To host this event in the Asheville Community is important and it is exciting," said Altitude Head Coach Joey Meyer. "We have a lot of spots to fill this year and the talent level is very high. This year's draft is a unique opportunity for all basketball fans to see how someone builds a team."
The local event will provide local fans an opportunity to view Coach Meyer and assistant coach Mike Sanders in the "War-Room" as they make their deciding 2002 draft selections. Hosted by Clear Channel Host Brian Hall, the event will also feature games with prizes, dance selections by the team's Interactive Squad, the Attitudes, and open discussions on all draftees.
The league's second draft will take place over 14 rounds and be conducted via conference call from locations in each of the eight NBDL markets.. National Basketball Association Director of Scouting, Marty Blake, compliments the event by providing player commentary between selections. Blake will join the NBDL Executive Director Karl Hicks and Milt Newton, Player Personnel Director, at NBDL draft headquarters in the Azalea Room at the Hilton Garden Inn in Duluth, Ga., a suburb of Atlanta. He will comment to NBDL draft parties and in-market media via the conference call on players selected during the first two rounds.
The Roanoke Dazzle will make the first selection followed by the Fayetteville Patriots. The Altitude will select third followed by the Huntsville Flight, Mobile Revelers, Columbus Riverdragons, North Charleston Lowgators and lastly the 2002 NBDL Champion Greenville Groove.
The selection process will operate similar to last year' s draft, with each team having one pick in each of the 14 rounds. Teams will have up to three minutes to make a selection in each round. No trades will be permitted during the draft and only players signed to an NBDL Standard Player Contract will be eligible to be drafted.
"Transitioning from college to professional play last season, the draft was extremely exciting," explained Meyer. "With the high level of play, this year's draft is even more exciting."
The Altitude will host local player tryouts Saturday and Sunday, October 26-27 at the University of North Carolina at Asheville Recreation Center. Local tryouts provide an opportunity for players that are currently not signed to an NBDL contract to display their talents and skills for a chance to play professional basketball. Following the local session and league approval, up to three qualified candidates from each local tryout could be invited to take part in team training camps that get underway in each NBDL city in November.
The Altitude opens preseason play Nov. 9 on the road against the Huntsville Flight, followed by a preseason home game Nov. 11 against the Columbus Riverdragons at 7:15 p.m. in the Asheville Civic Center.
The Altitude opens the 2002-03 regular season at Fayetteville, No. 15, followed by the regular-season home opener against Huntsville Nov. 16. Both games are scheduled for a 7:15 p.m. tip off.
