Altitude Open With Victory Over Riverdragons

COLUMBUS, Ga.-Five players scored in double figures for the Asheville Altitude as Joey Meyer's club upended the Columbus Riverdragons 88-73 in front of 3,360 fans at the Columbus Civic Center on Friday night.

Led by a stifling defense and balanced scoring, Asheville used a strong second half performance to pull away, outscoring the Riverdragons, 55-42, after halftime. Up by two points at the half, 33-31, Altitude point guard Kareem Reid sparked a 10-2 run over the first two minutes of the third quarter with two field goals and a pair of steals to help vault Asheville to a 43-33 advantage. The Altitude would not look back, paced by rookie forward Desmond Penigar's 18 points, eight of which came in the pivotal third quarter. Reserve guard Tobe Carberry tallied 17 points, while Reid notched 14 points to propel the Asheville to a 1-0 start and an opening night victory.

Columbus was led by rookie guard and former Georgia Bulldog, Ezra Williams, who led all scorers with 21 points, including three treys. Williams strong second half performance included 15 points on 4-7 shooting and 5-5 from the free throw line in the third and fourth quarters combined. Newly acquired Lonnie Harrell had 13 points off the bench in his Riverdragons debut, while Terence Morris was in double figures for the second straight game with 10 points.

Columbus travels north to Huntsville to take on the Flight tomorrow night at the Von Braun Center at 5 p.m. EST/ 4 p.m. CST. Asheville now returns home for its home opener on Sunday against the Huntsville Flight at 6:00 p.m. at the Asheville Civic Center.
