U.S. National Team News Release

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - David Valek (Orem, Utah) and Drew Shore (Denver, Colo.) each scored for the U.S. National Under-17 Team, but Alpena skated away with a 7-2 victory Sunday afternoon at the Ann Arbor Ice Cube.

"I was really proud of our effort today," said Chadd Cassidy, assistant coach of the U.S. National Under-17 Team. "The score doesn't indicate how hard we worked. The guys battled through a difficult situation, and a tough week of games."

Team USA lit up the scoreboard just 44 seconds into the game when Valek notched his eighth goal of the year, thanks to an assist from William Wrenn (Anchorage, Alaska). Wrenn took a shot from the right point and Valek tipped the puck past Alpena netminder Nate Pellegrino near the front of the net.

Alpena took advantage of five straight penalties called against Team USA, by scoring three power-play goals in less than five minutes. Ryan Sell netted back-to-back markers at 6:55 and 7:49, one of which came during a 5-on-3 power play. Evan West tallied another goal while his team had a two-man advantage at the 10-minute mark of the period.

The IceDiggers opened up a 5-1 lead after adding two goals in the opening five minutes of the second stanza. Jerrod Hartman put in a rebound at 3:50 and Adam Kuhn banged in a rebound 25 seconds later.

Team USA had a 5-on-3 power play of its own late in the second period, and early in the third frame, but its scoring attempt was foiled by Pellegrino, who made five saves for Alpena.

Tristan Harper added a sixth goal for the visitors at the 11:21 mark of the third period when he converted a slapshot from the top of the left circle. Carl Nielsen chipped in the final goal of the day for Alpena with 3:03 left in the game.

Shore recorded his seventh goal of the year during a 5-on-3 power-play for Team USA at 18:45 of the third period. Shore punched in a rebound just to Pellegrino's right, courtesy of assists from Ryan Bourque (Boxford, Mass.) and Cam Fowler (Farmington Hills, Mich.).

Murray finished with 27 saves for the home team and saw his season record fall to 4-6-1. Pellegrino stopped 23 shots and improved to 9-4-1.

The U.S. National Under-17 Team (10-13-0) heads to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan next Friday (Nov. 30) and Saturday (Dec. 1) for a pair of games against the Marquette Rangers at Lakeview Arena. Both contests will begin at 7:30 p.m. ET.

NOTES: David Valek is on a three-game point streak (2-1) ... Drew Shore notched his third power-play goal of the season ... Cam Fowler moved into first among Team USA's defensive corps with seven points (1-6) after chipping in an assist ... Ryan Bourque has amassed six points (3-3) in his last five games. Team USA went 1-for-7 on the power play, compared to a 3-for-5 mark for Alpena.
