Chicago Sky News Release
CHICAGO - Chicago Sky guard Allie Quigley has been named 2014 WNBA Sixth Woman of the Year presented by Samsung. Quigley earned 26 votes from a national panel of 38 sports media voters this season, surpassing San Antonio's Jia Perkins in the ballots. This is the first award for Allie Quigley in her six-year WNBA career.
"It's a surreal moment," said Sky guard Allie Quigley. "I think about all the hard work it took to get here and I know I couldn't have made it without my teammates, coaches, and family. They've supported me all year and always have my back."
Quigley dominated off the bench in 2014, leading the Sky in scoring during a team-high nine games. She also led the team in double-digit scoring performances, scoring in double figures on 21 occasions. In addition to providing consistent scoring, Quigley broke out for two 20-plus point games this season (7/13 at Atlanta, 8/7 at Minnesota). Quigley appeared off the bench in 33-of-34 games for the Sky this season and earned the first start of her career on June 10 against Seattle. Quigley has made immense improvements coming off the bench to help Chicago clinch its second playoff berth in franchise history.
"Pokey and I talked about being a bench leader early on in the season," said Quigley. "This gave me a lot of confidence and responsibility so I just tried to embrace the role and do my best whenever my name was called."
Throughout 2014, Quigley set all new career-highs and ranked in the top ten in the WNBA for Free-throw percent (.879) and Three-point percent (.387). Quigley's career-highs set in 2014 includes: field goal's made (12) field goal's attempted (22), three-point field goals made (3, five times) and points (27 at Atlanta on 7/13). Quigley averaged 24.8 minutes per game, doubling her career average in minutes played, and has more than doubled her career averages for points (11.2ppg, her previous high was 3.8 in 2013), rebounds (2.2rbg, her previous high was 0.8 in '08 and '09) and assists (1.9apg, her previous high was 0.6 in 2013).
"First and foremost, Allie's work ethic is unmatched," said Sky Head Coach and General Manager Pokey Chatman. So it's nice to see her efforts rewarded. "Her ability to play at such a high level, while also transitioning to the point guard position is a testament to her ability and she's a big part of the reason we're in the playoffs."
Quigley received the first Player of the Week award of her career for games played Aug. 4 through Aug. 10. The sixth-year pro out of DePaul came off the bench in all three games that week to lead the East in scoring (18.0 ppg) as Chicago posted a 2-1 mark. For the week, Quigley also paced Eastern Conference players in field goal percentage (.700, 21-of-30) and three-point field goal shooting (.625, 5-of-8).
In honor of being named the WNBA Sixth Woman of the Year presented by Samsung, Quigley will receive $5,000 and a specially-designed trophy from Tiffany & Co. Quigley and the Sky will battle the Atlanta Dream in the second game of the WNBA Eastern Conference Semifinals tonight beginning at 6:00 p.m. CT on ESPN2. The Sky leads the best-of-three series 1-0 and can advance to the WNBA Eastern Conference Finals tonight with a win at Allstate Arena.
